Nona Gaprindashvili was the 5th women's world chess champion and was the first woman to achieve the highest chess title of Grandmaster in 1978.

She is now the 19th Senior Women's Champion. Congratulations, Nona!

Although his team (Switzerland, for those who don't know) only managed a silver medal performance at the 11th European Senior Team Championship Korchnoi himself obviously held down first board with a magnificent series of games. Let's compare:

Korchnoi todayI think it's a toss between the two but general consensus is that Korchnoi betters with age.

As long as he keeps playing people we'll keep watching but I think the best part about him is what he's given back to chess through sharing his genius with the younger generation. Botvinnik shared with the soviets and Korchnoi shared with the world.

I got a huge kick out of the Boylston Chess Club Blog article on Senior Chess. You Should definitely check this out!

I'm not quite to the point of this article myself (by about 40-50 years) but God I hope I still have the sense of humor that Mike Griffin does!

That's right people, the hardest working IM in the world is now a GM. For those who don't know Larry is a fan of Shogi (the japanese form of chess), is a member of the Rybka development team, and is now the only GM to do either one of those things! (to our nearest recollection).

Even though I've never met Larry he has been an inspiration. cutting down the prejudice around chess variants and obviously using great judgment in the process (his tactical and attacking abilities are no doubt well honed from all the shogi). See Susan's Blog for the crosstable.
