The 2021 FIDE World Cup is a 206-player knockout taking place in Krasnaya Polyana, near Sochi, Russia from July 12 to August 6. The prize fund is almost $1.9m, with $110,000 for the winner, while the finalists also qualify for the 2022 Candidates Tournament. The top 50 players, who include world nos 1 and 2 Magnus Carlsen and Fabiano Caruana, are seeded directly into Round 2.

Each match consists of two classical games where the players have 90 minutes for 40 moves, then 30 minutes to the end of the game, plus a 30-second increment from move 1. If tied, a playoff will be held on the 3rd day. There are two 25+10 rapid games followed, if needed, by two 10+10 games, then two 5+3, and finally an Armageddon game, where White has 5 minutes to Black’s 4 but a draw counts as a win for Black. No draw offers are allowed until after move 30. Official website:

  1. He was really chess genius! I was 10 when this game was plaid! I remember, they all talk about new chess wunderkind (German expression) who's going to bit Russians! History told us – he did!

  2. 9:40 it still feels that taking the rook on f3 would be better. Qd4 maybe blocks the checkmate on d1 and threatens one on g7 but still in the exchange he would lose a knight and not rook, it would be rook vs a knight and a bishop with pawn on g5 being an easy target. Anand still would have won this because bishop and a knight is better but I think Qd4 wasn't accurate (and so was Kramnik's Qxg5 though I suspect he was keeping the queen for some perpetual check possibility).

  3. I just recently started taking chess seriously and I'm still a beginner with very little experience but I didn't have a hard time finding the best moves in this one when Agadmator asked us to try. Honestly it just took me a couple of seconds to confidently predict the next best move and that happens a lot in agadmators videos, I'm often right about the next move. Is this normal? I don't really think that was super impressive but he makes it seem like that. What do you guys think?

  4. No castle would be veriegation, however I would still separate for legacy those lines, and see what future brings… Are no castle engine also way way stronger? As database is not so advanced?
