Norway Chess is a 6-player double round-robin featuring World Champion Magnus Carlsen and taking place in the Clarion Hotel Energy in Stavanger, Norway from 7-17 September. Each of the 10 rounds consists of a classical game where a win is worth 3 paoints and a loss 0. If the players draw they play an Armageddon game, where the winner earns 1.5 points and the loser 1 point. No draw offers are allowed before move 30.

The classical time control is 2 hours for all moves, with a 10-second increment per move only after move 40. For Armageddon White (the same player who had White in the classical game) has 10 minutes to Black’s 7, with a 1-second increment from move 41. Black wins if the game ends in a draw. A tie for 1st place will be decided by two 3+2 blitz games followed, if necessary, by a 5 vs. 4-minute Armageddon game. Official website: norwaychess.no

  1. Sergey had Magnus on the ropes then he broke free and counterattacked and finally delivered a knock-out punch with Kd4!

  2. Kind of crazy, having a huge time lead is somewhat wasted as you'll be giving up time to the opponent to think so its not a straight advantage.

  3. Just an idea..
Eventually, a player will not allow the world champion to intimidate them..

    Eventually every player, will fall..

Yes, chess engineering is amazing, but there's more to a game then just a computer..

    Magnus will fall.. eventually..

Only rich people get to play him..

He will fail, as soon as someone doesn't care about him anymore..

    Fact

  4. One of the lesson you learn the hard way, if your opponent is under time-pressure, don't rush moves so you can flag him.

  5. How about Bxb4 for the move? OK, the N forks, but Ke3 forces the N to move, either trading for the B or otherwise; either way the passed pawn is gone.

  6. Why couldn’t Karajakin play Nb2 to guard the bishop? He’d lose the passed pawn but it might still be drawable?

  7. Almost everytime i try to play on my opponents time i lose. I think that is the way of Caissa to say " chess is about good moves and not about flagging".
Happy though to see that even world championship challengers cannot resist the temptation.

  8. Why all Magnus and Norway chess and not Wesley so or fide Olympiad (Philippines was disqualified!!) or 9LX?
