The 2021 FIDE World Cup is a 206-player knockout taking place in Krasnaya Polyana, near Sochi, Russia from July 12 to August 6. The prize fund is almost $1.9m, with $110,000 for the winner, while the finalists also qualify for the 2022 Candidates Tournament. The top 50 players, who include world nos 1 and 2 Magnus Carlsen and Fabiano Caruana, are seeded directly into Round 2.

Each match consists of two classical games where the players have 90 minutes for 40 moves, then 30 minutes to the end of the game, plus a 30-second increment from move 1. If tied, a playoff will be held on the 3rd day. There are two 25+10 rapid games followed, if needed, by two 10+10 games, then two 5+3, and finally an Armageddon game, where White has 5 minutes to Black’s 4 but a draw counts as a win for Black. No draw offers are allowed until after move 30. Official website: worldcup.fide.com

  1. This is the second oldest trick in the book. The oldest trick is when your alleged girlfriend offers to be in charge of contraception, but her intent is to fall pregnant, force you into marriage or else lifelong alimony.

  2. I am so proud that I solved this move. 🙂 Most of his "feel free to pause the video" puzzles are too hard for me.

  3. I thought the oldest trick was facing the board so your opponent had to look into the sun. I guess the intent was so he wouldn't see the dive bombers swarming in.

  4. Ne7 is a nice trick Agad, tnx u for tutorial, u know we are all dying for some improvement. Its a nice move for everyone, this proves that in elite chess it works too, carlsen:)

  5. Oldest trick in the book is to challenge someone to a first to 5 in rock paper scissors but when they make a fist you immediately scream PAPER, BIATCH ✋

  6. 10:52 actually happened by sacrificing the queen for the anasthesia’s mate ( The name is kind of like this ) in an official over the board competition and the funny thing is it was Magnus in that game as well.

  7. Playing so nonchalantly devious that your opponent misses something THAT visible because it seems like you're not playing for a win based on those 3 previous moves, the repeat twice and the same move again after another different move, lulls the opponent into a false sense of security in the draw.
